We #Beetschwestern have been taking part in the wonderful Hedge Day initiative in the eastern provinces of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, as well as the new addition of Carinthia, every year. As enthusiastic gardening fans, our participation also contributes to the preservation and protection of rare native plant species - in the spirit of conservation gardening. The trees and shrubs all come from the region. In this way, each of us can make a valuable contribution to living biodiversity. The coveted plants can be pre-ordered from September 1. The Hedge Day itself will take place this year on November 9 for the eastern provinces and on November 16 in Carinthia.

The Hedge Day was launched by the Regional Grove Propagation Association (RGV) to promote biodiversity and maintain an intact habitat for native animals and plants in the long term. RGV chairman Andreas Patschka explains: "From collection to breeding and planting, we rely on the natural power of the genetic diversity of our regions. As descendants of wild-growing parent stocks, our plants are perfectly adapted to local soils and climatic conditions and are therefore much more resistant than classic imported plants."

Local bees also seem to like home cooking better than imported food sources, as Patschka explains: "Over the course of evolution, bees and other beneficial insects have developed together and adapted to each other perfectly. A wide variety of native species therefore also attracts a large number of pollinators to our own fruit and vegetable gardens."

Large selection of regional woody plants

This year's Hedge Day assortment once again offers garden lovers a diverse selection of native, regionally propagated wild shrubs, fruit shrubs and fruit trees. These include numerous rarities as well as the wild shrub of the year 2024: the sweet chestnut! To mark the occasion, the RGV professionals have dedicated a special monograph to it, providing inquisitive woody plant fans with lots of useful information about this noble wild tree. And anyone who orders a sweet chestnut can be doubly pleased, as the informative work comes free with the local chestnut.

We #Beetschwestern love to browse through the individual categories and discover new varieties such as Speierling, Pimpernuss or crab apple and also order them at very favorable conditions.

Pre-orders from September 1

For all those who want to secure the coveted shrubs and trees from RGV breeding, things will get serious from September 1. The diverse range can then be pre-ordered in the Heckentag webshop. "On request, we can also deliver the plants to your doorstep from early to mid-November for a small shipping fee. But of course we're even more excited about seeing familiar faces at the Hedge Day and talking to our dedicated supporters in person," says Patschka, looking forward to the event and adds: "In any case, the bare-rooted shrubs should be planted in the ground as soon as possible - autumn is the best time for this."

The Regional Grove Propagation Association (RGV)

In the Regional Wood Propagation Association, collectors, ecologists, farmers and partner nurseries work together to collect and propagate unusual and rare woody plants as well as common native tree and shrub species. The association members collect the ripe fruits of the wild shrubs and trees by hand, obtain regional seeds from them and grow the young plants with much love. This results in wild shrubs of unique quality, which impress with their vigor and resistance and bring great diversity to any garden.
