Lean meadows - almost vanished natural treasures

Our mission is clear: in the pursuit of a healthy environment, we focus on flowering rough pastures, a type of landscape that is in danger of disappearing. These diverse meadows play a crucial role as CO₂ champions - they not only effectively bind CO₂, but also produce oxygen. At the same time, they are home to a variety of plant and animal species.

Unfortunately, many rough pastures have disappeared from our cultural landscape and have had to make way for intensive agriculture. As soon as we apply fertilizer, many plant and animal species lose their habitat, as rough pastures only develop on nutrient-poor soils. The plants and animals found there are specialized in this habitat and are rare or endangered.

There are several rough pastures in the KlimafitWald that are maintained through grazing. In addition, the overgrowth of trees and shrubs must be reduced from time to time with forestry measures. One of the rough pastures has a large stand of hawthorn and an ancient orchard.

In addition, we have started to turn a fat meadow into a lean meadow. This is mowed twice a year and has not been fertilized since this year. This greatly reduces the hay yield. The so-called "thinning" should take around three years. We will monitor the process closely and also the extent to which the plant and animal species will change.
