Native crayfish arrive in the KlimafitWald forest

Last Saturday was the day. After our preparations and intensive discussions with biologist Professor Strasser, the first native European crayfish(Astacus astacus) were finally released into the KlimafitWald last weekend. They come from the biologist's own breeding facility in Eitweg, Lavanttal, who is fully committed to the conservation and distribution of this almost completely extinct crayfish species.

The passionate crayfish breeder took the time to explain to the KlimafitWald team and the enthusiastic couple Jürgen and Karin Marzi, who are passionate supporters of the project, the most important information about the difference between male and female crayfish, their size and their most important characteristics. He also showed everyone how acclimatization should take place and how to attract the crayfish in order to observe them.

This works best in the evening with a fresh fish bait, as the crayfish can smell fresh blood at 50 meters. They also have the ability to easily find the nearest water - be it a stream, pond or lake. However, they are generally site-loyal, unless the stocking is too high or the conditions are inadequate. Each animal needs its own "home", i.e. its own hiding place, which is why many different hiding places have been created in the pond.

Now it's a case of wait and see, because the male and female crayfish of different ages could - if the conditions are right - produce offspring as early as next year!
