From local cultural supply and thoughts on climate protection
What can we do next? What do we have to lose? In 2024, SOHO in Ottakring dives into questions of climate justice and democratic negotiation, initiates community-building artistic processes and inspires the joy of doing.
"Better no atmosphere than waiting for it to get better."
This could be the train of thought of those who feel drawn to Mars in order to take the plunge from a broken Earth with lots of money and eternal life. This is exemplary of a human desire for technology-based power, which is often spread by the media, to dominate nature beyond the "small" world.
Fortunately, other spirits are animated by a loyalty to earthly existence, more modest thoughts and reverence for finality.
On the other hand, who can afford to take care of a balance between the worlds that interact in a great whole? Convenience and habit, anger and rage, fear and resignation, everyday worries or lack of interest, greed for profit and the pursuit of power are right at the doorstep and stand in the way of great societal achievements.
What we can expect
In the exhibition "A collective journey to climate justice: learning together, acting together", complex relationships between historical, social and economic causes of the growing injustices that are closely linked to ecological developments are made visible and tangible through contemporary artistic practices.
Themes such as critique of the hierarchical relationship between humans and nature; feminist aspects and ongoing colonial exploitation of humans, plants, animals and other planetary beings will be included as well as indigenous knowledge from communities of "Abya Yala" (pre-colonial name for the Americas).
Here, time is related to the cycles of nature and the legacy of our ancestors, breaking with the linearity of our understanding of time.
In view of the size of the topic, which manifests itself on a global scale and at the same time can be felt and experienced here and now in Austria, collaborative methods are used in particular. Communicating the connection between the loss of biodiversity and social injustice has top priority here.
