Maintenance measures to create a species-rich forest

The storm "Paula" caused major damage in Germany and Austria in 2008 and also left a trail of devastation in the Lavanttal. Never before had so many trees been uprooted in such a short space of time. Large areas were also affected in the Lavanttal. In the area of the Klimafitwald, the destruction was also seen as an opportunity to establish a healthy mixed forest. After 17 years, it is now an important forestry task to guarantee the healthy development of a mixed forest through the targeted removal of young trees.

Deciduous tree species were planted on the devastated areas and tree species such as larch and pine established themselves in the sunny areas.

During the recent maintenance measures, particular attention was paid to promoting the surviving deciduous trees, followed by fir, larch and pine, and spruce trees were specifically removed. Unfortunately, we have noticed a large loss of deciduous trees over the last 17 years, caused by browsing and peeling of the bark as well as long periods of drought and heat.

The choice of which tree species to leave standing and which to cut at a young age plays a decisive role in the overall composition of the forest as it is being established.

Therefore, this activity is associated with great care, attentiveness and foresight.

Another important measure is the protection of the existing young fir trees, which are also known as the "Wienerschnitzel" of the roe deer. We have therefore started to better protect young fir trees in forest areas with self-grown young fir trees, which are unfortunately almost 100 percent hindered in their growth by browsing, by color-coding them and working closely with our hunters.
