From the organic waste garbage can to the flower pot

Plants, flowers and vegetables are growing again from fruit and garden waste from Vienna's organic waste garbage cans. The potting and garden soil from the 48 "Guter Grund" is a prime example of the cycle of nature and is now available again: for the first time this year in a small, practical 5-liter bag for repotting houseplants.
Just in time for the start of the gardening season, the 48er "Guter Grund" soil is available again - depending on the intended use in 40 liter, 18 liter and, since this year, also in a practical 5 liter bag for smaller plants in the home. The "small" one is available at the 48er-Tandler, the "medium" one at the 48er-Tandler and at all Viennese waste disposal sites, while the "large" one can only be purchased at the waste disposal sites - for example in Hernals.
The peat-free soil, which is made from garden waste, apple slugs, lettuce leaves and many other biogenic waste from the more than 90,000 organic waste garbage cans in the green belt, closes the cycle of nature in an environmentally friendly way. For Climate City Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky, this is a prime example of a genuine circular economy: "Everyone can contribute to the high quality of life in our city: the high-quality and regional Viennese potting and garden soil is a 'good reason' for all Viennese to use the organic waste garbage can. Those who dispose of their garden and kitchen waste correctly actively contribute to climate protection." The cycle is then completely closed when the nutrient-rich soil is used again in your own garden, on your balcony or in your home.
Turning organic waste into compost and potting soil
The raw material for the potting soil is the more than 100,000 tons of organic waste that the 48er collects in the more than 90,000 organic waste garbage cans in the city's green belt. From this, around 40,000 tons of A+ quality compost are produced each year in Europe's largest composting plant, the city's own Lobau composting plant. The soil is then mixed at Compo 's soil plant in the 22nd district. This means that the entire organic cycle - from collection in the organic waste garbage can to processing the soil - takes place in Vienna. This ensures the shortest possible transportation routes.
Peat-free and 100% natural
No mineral fertilizers or peat are used in the production process. Both are important factors for climate protection. The peat-free soil from 48er consists of 100 percent natural ingredients and meets the strict requirements of the Austrian Ecolabel. The quality criteria guarantee a balanced supply of nutrients, ensure high plant growth and offer a sustainable soil alternative. The "Guter Grund" soil can be used for all planting in the home and garden, for potting and repotting flowering and garden plants and for improving the soil in flower and vegetable beds.
The peat-free 48er soil "Guter Grund" is available at all Viennese waste disposal sites and at the 48er-Tandler in Margareten and Donaustadt:
5 liter bag: 2.50 euros (only available at 48er-Tandler)
18 liter bag: 4 Euro
40 liter bag: 6 Euro (only available at waste disposal sites)
