EU invests 86 million euros in long-term climate and environmental projects

With an investment of over 86 million euros, the EU Commission is supporting new projects that aim to accelerate the transition to a climate-resilient and environmentally friendly future. The funding comes from the LIFE program, the EU's central funding instrument for environmental and climate policy.

A total of 24 strategic projects were selected in 12 member states, including Germany, France, Spain and the Netherlands. Among other things, they are intended to help implement the European Biodiversity Strategy, the Circular Economy Action Plan and the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.

"These projects put the European Green Deal into practice - in cities, forests, fields and our rivers." - Florika Fink-Hooijer, Director-General for the Environment at the EU Commission.

Focus on climate adaptation and biodiversity

One focus of the new measures is on adapting to the already noticeable consequences of climate change. This means better early warning systems for extreme weather, renaturation of wetlands, more protection against droughts and floods and targeted reforestation.

Another goal is the protection and restoration of endangered habitats. The projects promote the networking of ecosystems and rely on nature-based solutions - an approach that is not only effective but also particularly sustainable.

Local impact, European vision

It is noteworthy that many of the projects rely on close cooperation between authorities, research institutions, NGOs and industry. This results in regional solutions with a model character for the whole of Europe. One example: In southern Spain, a pilot project for climate-resilient agriculture is being funded, which works together with local farmers and at the same time receives scientific support.

Why these investments are important now

2024 was the warmest year Europe has ever experienced - with dramatic consequences: Forest fires, floods, crop failures. These new investments are therefore not just a signal of political intent, but a necessary response to the pressing reality.

The projects are not only intended to reduce emissions, but also to ensure that Europe becomes more resilient to the climate crisis - and to involve as many people as possible in the process.
