Spring awakening in the KlimafitWald: hedges, orchards & real diversity

Great strides are being made in the KlimafitWald - the spring work is impressive! Over the past few weeks, not only has there been a lot of hard work, but also sustainable design: New hedgerow plantings and the creation of orchard meadows are providing important impetus for more biodiversity and a stable ecosystem.

Traditional, robust fruit varieties such as deer pears, old apple varieties, plums and a quince were planted - selected to suit the location and protected against browsing in order to remain resilient to wild animals. These measures not only strengthen the natural character of the landscape, but also actively contribute to the preservation of old cultivated varieties.

Why hedges and orchards are so valuable

Orchard meadows are considered biodiversity hotspots. Up to 5,000 animal and plant species can be found in these extensively used biotopes. In addition to their ecological value, they also promote regional identity and provide high-quality, healthy food in the long term.

Natural hedges provide habitats, protection and food sources for a variety of animal species - from insects to birds and small mammals. They serve as ecological stepping stones, connect habitats and promote genetic exchange in the animal and plant world. They also make an important contribution to climate resilience through wind protection and soil stabilization.

We have planted a large mixture of different hedgerow plants, including hawthorn, Pfaffenkapperl, privet, cornelian cherry, weeping cherry, willow, wild rose, raspberries and a sweet chestnut.

Working together for a greener future

Many thanks to our committed partners who have made these measures possible.

With their support, we were able to create another piece of a living future in the KlimafitWald - a place where nature, climate and people grow in harmony.
