Pigeon plague? New census shows significantly fewer urban pigeons in Vienna

They coo, they fly - and they are often misjudged: The latest pigeon census in Vienna clearly shows that there can be no talk of a "pigeon plague". Only one pigeon for every 50 Viennese - Tierschutz Austria calls for animal-friendly management instead of defensive measures.

It is estimated that there are only between 50,000 and 60,000 urban pigeons in the entire city area. Tierschutz Austria supported the volunteer team in the survey and is now calling for animal welfare-compliant strategies for the peaceful coexistence of humans and animals.

Figure based on research - not gut feeling

The counts are part of a research project of the Wildlife Service Viennawhich has been running since October 2021. Among other things, the health and nutritional status, life expectancy and movement patterns of urban pigeons are being investigated. Tierschutz Austria regularly participates in the survey and welcomes the well-founded figures that are now available.

"This year's census confirms once again that the cries of a pigeon plague in Vienna are just scaremongering. There are tried and tested solutions for peaceful coexistence that should finally be implemented across the board in Vienna," says MMag.a Dr.in Madeleine Petrovic, President of Tierschutz Austria.

Plague myth: urban pigeons are wrongly demonized

Tierschutz Austria criticizes the blanket denigration of urban pigeons as a plague. The animals are originally descended from domesticated rock pigeons and have lived in close contact with humans for centuries. Today, however, they are often rejected - and suffer from measures such as pigeon deterrent spikes on buildings.

"Pigeon spikes cause unnecessary suffering, damage the cityscape and create additional work for animal welfare organizations. There have long been better solutions. Only the uninformed continue to spread unfounded panic," Petrovic continued.

Vienna needs modern pigeon management

Effective pigeon management must be scientifically based - not driven by emotions or prejudices. Animal Welfare Austria therefore demands:

  • the expansion of managed pigeon lofts,
  • controlled feeding according to clear rules,
  • Birth control through egg exchange,
  • the ban on animal cruelty spikes on buildings.
