Something big for the energy transition is about to happen in Burgenland! Austria's largest electrolysis plant to date for the production of green hydrogen is being built here. It will primarily use the power of wind and sun. These two help to produce hydrogen in an environmentally friendly way. This means that the hydrogen is clean and does not release any harmful exhaust gases into the air.

The project launched by "Burgenland Energie" is one of the largest hydrogen projects in Europe. The green hydrogen it produces is one of the most important building blocks on the road to a climate-neutral future. Researchers assume that we will need 4-5 times as much hydrogen in Austria in 2040 as we do today.

3-stage expansion up to 300 megawatts

Burgenland Energie and Verbund have announced their intention to build electrolysis capacities totaling 300 MW. The project is to be implemented in three stages. It will start with a plant with a capacity of 60 MW, which will be located in Nickelsdorf in northern Burgenland. "From 2026, we will produce 9,000 tons of green hydrogen from Burgenland wind and solar energy per year. In the full expansion stage by 2030, this will amount to 40,000 tons of hydrogen per year for Austria, which will save 400,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually," explains Burgenland Energie CEO Stefan Sharma. The current demand for hydrogen in Austria is 120,000 tons per year

The fully developed hydrogen plant will therefore produce a third of the amount of green hydrogen currently required by Austria - and all without CO₂ emissions. That's a lot of energy!

Green light from the EU

The European Commission has given the green light for the establishment of a joint venture between the Austrian energy suppliers Verbund and Burgenland Energie. This was announced by the Brussels authority in a statement. With this cooperation, Verbund and Burgenland Energie want to enable the production of green hydrogen in large quantities. The two energy suppliers will each hold a 50 percent stake in the company.

By 2030, they plan to invest 400 million euros through their new company in order to build up electrolysis capacities of 300 megawatts (MW).

Hydrogen can help us to become less dependent on other countries in the energy sector because we can produce our own electricity without any help.
