One of the good things about hydrogen is that it can store energy. This means that if we have too much energy from the wind or sun, we can convert it into hydrogen and use it later. This helps people to make better use of energy.
What is hydrogen?
Hydrogen is a specific chemical substance and is the most abundant substance in our
universe. It is a very light and
flammable gas and is abbreviated with the chemical symbol H (= hydrogenium)
.
How can hydrogen be produced?
There are two possible ways to produce hydrogen:
- Today it is mostly obtained from natural gas by means of steam reforming. This releases a lot of CO₂, which makes it not as environmentally friendly as commonly thought.
- The second option is to produce hydrogen using electricity in an electrolysis process. If this electricity comes from renewable energy - including wind and solar energy, but also geothermal energy and bioenergy - then it is referred to as "green hydrogen". This is the most environmentally friendly. Today, only 2% is produced in this way.
How can hydrogen help us stop global warming?
Hydrogen can be used as an alternative to fossil fuels. For example, cars can be powered by hydrogen instead of using gasoline engines. This means less harmful gases in the air. In factories, hydrogen can also help to make the air cleaner.
And it doesn't stop there! Hydrogen can also be used to generate clean electricity that we can use anywhere.
Some challenges
But there are still a few problems that we need to solve. To produce hydrogen, we need a lot of energy, preferably from clean sources. We also need to find better ways to store and distribute hydrogen.
Nevertheless, hydrogen is exciting for our future energy. If we use smart technology and work hard, we can make our world cleaner and stop climate change. That sounds like an exciting future, doesn't it?
