On the way to a sustainable energy future: hydrogen storage options
If we do without coal, oil and natural gas, what will we use to drive our vehicles, heat our buildings and generate our electricity? And our hunger for energy is growing worldwide. That's why researchers around the world are looking for clean energy sources. One of them is hydrogen. In order to use these energies successfully, we need good storage options.
Burgenland has set itself ambitious goals for a sustainable energy future. By 2030, the province should be able to supply itself with the energy it needs - without having to buy additional electricity - primarily through the use of wind and solar energy.
And it wants to be climate-neutral by 2030, which means that, on balance, no more gases that affect the climate are emitted than are converted.
To achieve these goals, the development of storage solutions is crucial. Why?
We have far fewer sunny days in winter than in summer and the wind is not the same every day. As a result, we currently generate much more electricity than we need in summer and less in winter. If we could store the energy generated in summer, we wouldn't have to buy any more in winter.
A collaboration for environmentally friendly storage
The company Burgenland Energie is working with partners to plan an environmentally friendly large-scale storage facility in the multi-megawatt range. This project has the potential to solve fundamental problems in the energy supply. As mentioned above, it is about the disparity between the amount of energy generated and our energy requirements. This storage facility will make Burgenland the first climate-neutral region in the world.
