December 8 - Holiday is a matter of opinion

For 20 years now, Austrian retailers have been allowed to stay open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Feast of the Assumption - this year, for the first time, more retailers are exercising their right not to open at all.

A change of heart?

After fighting for the additional open shopping day from the 1980s onwards, which over time has become almost the highest-selling day of the year (depending on the sector), several retail chains are keeping their doors closed for the first time this year.

The REWE Group has been doing this with BILLA and PENNY for several years now. This year, the drugstore chain BIPA will also be joining them (by the way, DM is also closed).

Another new development is that SPAR with the Interspar chain and the discount stores LIDL and HOFER are giving their employees this holiday for the first time.

However, this always excludes locations with an operating obligation (in shopping centers - which are open - and at train stations, airports, etc.).

pro.earth conclusion:

We wish everyone who has been celebrating this holiday for 20 years or for the first time ever a relaxing time. We strongly advise against shopping! 💚
