Iberian peninsula plans green energy corridor to supply Europe

Heads of state and government from eight EU Mediterranean countries and Portugal are meeting today in Alicante for the EU-MED9 summit.

In addition to representatives from Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Croatia, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Cyprus, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Charles Michel have also been invited.

Topics include the economic consequences of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, the effects of climate change and how to deal with migrants crossing the Mediterranean.

An idea put forward by representatives from Spain, Portugal and France, according to which the Iberian Peninsula should supply the rest of Europe with "green energy" in the future, will also be discussed.

The project envisages the construction of a pipeline across the Mediterranean from Barcelona to Marseille, which the three countries had already agreed on in October.

Initially, natural gas will flow through the pipeline, but later green hydrogen will be produced.

Green hydrogen?

Hydrogen production requires a great deal of energy - but if sufficient electricity from renewable energy sources is available, the electrolysis that splits the water and turns it into hydrogen can be CO2-neutral.

The combustion of hydrogen only produces water vapor - which contains no CO2.

pro.earth conclusion:

The energy required for production is still so high that it can hardly be achieved with green electricity that is affordable for the end consumer. However, hydrogen is a major topic in the energy transition and will probably be part of the solution. 💚
