Many people do not have access to justice, sufficient information and their basic rights. However, these are essential prerequisites for sustainable development and prosperity. Warlike conflicts, weak institutions, corruption, domestic and criminal violence, etc. prevent people from living peacefully and growing up with fair education and work opportunities and fuel inequality, poverty, hunger and displacement.

 

Some facts about the current situation

  • 68% of the entire world population lives in autocratic systems
  • 2/3 of humanity lacks full access to their fundamental rights
  • There were 29 armed conflicts and wars internationally in 2020
  • USD 2.16 trillion is lost annually through corruption and bribery
  • 31% of all prisoners worldwide are imprisoned without conviction
  • At the end of 2020, 82.4 million people were displaced
  • In Latin America, an average of 23 per 100,000 people are murdered due to the high crime rate (in Germany it is 0.7 per 100,000)

The goals of SDG #16 by 2030 at a glance

  • Reduction of all forms of violence and the resulting excess mortality
  • Stopping child abuse and exploitation as well as child trafficking and torture
  • Improving the rule of law and access to justice both nationally and internationally
  • Massive reduction of all illegal financial and arms flows and organized crime
  • Significant reduction in corruption and bribery
  • Making institutions efficient and transparent
  • Decision-making at all levels must be needs-oriented, inclusive, participatory and representative
  • Involve developing countries more closely in international decision-making processes and

 

What can each individual do?

We should use our democratic right to vote. And the better we know about our rights, the better we can recognize and fight injustice and grievances. With political interest and commitment, we can support peaceful, democratic developments.

 

 

The climate crisis can only be overcome through interlinked social, economic and ecological measures, a "transformation of the world".
