BirdLife Austria: There is no alternative to restoring nature

Nature Restoration Law must continue to be consistently pursued in the EU Council of Environment Ministers

The conservation of our nature and the restoration of damaged habitats, together with climate change, are among the greatest challenges of our generation. That is why the nature conservation organization BirdLife Austria is urging us to press ahead with consultations on the urgently needed EU Nature Restoration Law. For a sustainable future for generations to come.

Especially moors, swamps, wild rivers and floodplains, the few remaining old natural forests in Austria as well as traditional rural habitats such as colorful flower meadows, animal pastures and orchards deserve our utmost attention and should be restored, demands BirdLife. This is the only way future generations will be able to experience natural landscapes with vibrant and diverse flora and fauna. Restoring nature is not an option, it is our obligation!

All this is in line with the "European Green Deal" and the biodiversity strategies of the EU and Austria and is also demanded by over 3,300 scientists [1] and over 800,000 citizens [2] across the EU.

The common path to more nature-friendly agriculture, forestry and water management is possible and must continue to be pursued together, even if this is not always easy. BirdLife calls on the federal states responsible for nature conservation in Austria and the Austrian members of the EU Parliament to move forward swiftly with constructive proposals instead of rejecting the law. The planned law is a great opportunity that we must seize.
