Event tip "Tipping Time" - Climate conference of civil society

Since yesterday, world-class researchers, artists and thinkers, such as the renowned climate researcher Friederike Otto, have been gathering in St. Pölten to use art, workshops and much more to approach the question of whether and how we can still hope and what we should dream of in times of climate crisis. After all, we still lack narratives on how we can live well in the future.

"How can I dream during the day if what wakes me up in the morning entangles me even more deeply in the catastrophe?" asked Nikolaj Schultz yesterday at the opening of the climate conference. He is one of the most influential young hopefuls, described by 'Der Zeit' as the "up-and-coming star of sociology" and deals intensively with the existential unease of climate change.

"We know that our way of traveling, our way of being in the world, leaves traces. That wasn't part of our horizon of thinking beforeWe know that our way of traveling, our way of being in the world, leaves traces. That wasn't part of our thinking in the past."

Can you feel it? Earth heating is not an emotion, but it is associated with many feelings. Anger, sadness, joy - they are powerful signposts and have immense potential to spur us into action. Instead, the reactions usually range from silent shock to deliberate suppression of the facts to open resentment, sometimes even violence against activists.

Globart curator Stefanie Jaksch describes the aim as follows: "No one is alone, neither with their fears and worries, nor with the search for solutions. Everything is already there - now it's all about listening, talking, networking and, last but not least, celebrating what we have achieved together. That is invaluable in times of deep uncertainty."

Tarun Kade, curatorial director of Tangente St. Pölten: "Artists, researchers and activists are coming together to debate one of the central issues of our time: climate change. About the strong geological and also psychological transformations that it brings about, and about possibilities for action, possibilities to connect and join forces."

"We know from research that it doesn't take a majority or even an absolute majority to bring about significant change in a society. A good example of this is the history of the women's movement, where an originally very small, determined group or activists created very important rights and legal foundations. And these are the so-called social tipping points."

Jakob Brossmann, Artistic Director "Tipping Time"

World-class guests

"We are incredibly proud to bring world-class researchers and thinkers to St. Pölten," says Brossmann. Physicist Friederike Otto works as lead author on the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and sociologist Nikolaj Schultz is one of the most important voices of our time when it comes to dealing with the climate crisis. "We are looking forward to developing a new language for our being-in-the-world together with pioneering scientists and renowned authors such as Daniel Schreiber," adds Stefanie Jaksch.

"Civil society is the most important thing we have"

Researcher Otto explains this and points out that we will not solve the climate crisis with new technology. "We can only solve it by becoming absolutely aware as a civil society that it is a problem linked to growing inequality."

Female artists design the program

Artists accompany Tipping Time: slam poet Katharina Wenty creates portraits of the "protagonists of change" that run through the program. Cellist and singer-songwriter Marie Spaemann comments on the events on stage with delicate sounds and intense loops. Also performing: Wöd Chor Plus, Sigrid Horn Trio, Christoph Richter and Violetta Parisini.
