UN Sustainable Development Goal #17: Partnerships to achieve the goals

...strengthen the means of implementation and breathe new life into the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development

"We can be the first generation to succeed in eradicating poverty, just as we could be the last to have the chance to save our planet."

Ban-Ki Moon, UN Secretary-General from 2007 to 2016

The 17th goal is the basic prerequisite for achieving the SDGs. Only together, in local or global partnerships, at all levels - financial, legal, technological, economic and institutional - can the SDGs be successfully implemented. This is the overarching principle of the 2030 Agenda:

"leave no one behind"

The current situation in data

  • Expenditure on official development assistance (ODA) reached an all-time high of USD 161 billion in 2020, doubling since 2000
  • Donor countries invest around 0.3% of their GDP in development aid - the target is 0.7%
  • ODA expenditure in Germany amounted to over 28 billion US dollars in 2020, exceeding 0.7% of gross national income for the first time
  • The financing gap to achieve all SDGs is an incredible 4.5 trillion euros per year
  • The least developed countries' share of world trade is only 1%
  • The decline in remittances from emigrants to their families in developing countries amounts to a MINUS of 7%
  • The decline in foreign direct investment in developing countries amounts to a MINUS of 40%

More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can only master it if we face it together. Kofi Annan UN Secretary-General from 1997 to 2006
