Plant an insect paradise from the best regional wild shrubs

Every year, we #Beetschwestern look forward to September, when the local "Hedge Day" is back in season!

This is a campaign organized by the Regional Grove Propagation Association (RGV), which has been taking place in the fall for many years. The aim is to propagate plants that have become rare, which have been bred from regional seeds, and by reintroducing them to the region.propagation. Passionate collectors harvest countless fruits and seeds in the fall, which are then professionally processed and grown into plants in partner nurseries.

We, who live in Vienna, Lower Austria, Northern Burgenland and Carinthia, can order these from the hedge store at comparatively very reasonable prices.

Because only shrubs and trees from the original growing regions have the genetic and regional adaptations to withstand the increasingly frequent temperature extremes. Join us and play an active role in protecting native species.

  1. From September 1 to October 14, you can browse through the range of more than 50 different woody plants, including rarities such as the Speierling, the Pimpernut and many more, on the Hedge Day website www.heckentag.at - depending on whether you live in Eastern Austria or Carinthia. The only condition is that you use the shrubs in the respective region.

2. you order online and either decide to pick up the plants at one of the specified pick-up stations on November 4 or have them sent to you. We have already tried both and both options worked really well. You can talk to the staff and other woody plant fans on site.

Many advantages in one promotion!

In this way, we can firstly increase biodiversity in our gardens, contribute to the preservation of species that have become rare and also make a contribution to climate protection and also to the continuation of the Hedge Day, a really wonderful initiative in our eyes that we would like to strongly recommend to you!

The secret of regional plant power

https://static.wixstatic.com/media/374d7f_8b85f6ed0f2f4519a253822a36e74e6a~mv2.jpgThe native Heckentag plants are known for being particularly hardy and vigorous. The secret lies in their regional origins, because from collection to cultivation and planting, we rely on the full power of the natural genetic diversity of our regions. As descendants of wild-growing parent stocks, our woody plants are perfectly adapted to local soils and climatic conditions. The young plants that you receive on Hedge Day are provided by the Regional Grove Propagation Association RGV.

Its members have been collecting wild shrubs and trees by hand for 30 years, extracting the seeds from the fruit and lovingly growing the young trees and shrubs. This results in wild shrubs of unique quality, which impress with their vigor and resistance and bring great diversity to any garden. The many beneficial insects that swarm around the hedge plants also ensure greater pollination success and a richer harvest in the fruit and vegetable garden.

The blackthorn

The blackthorn is a real jack-of-all-trades: it provides food and habitat for over 110 butterfly species

The Sal willow

Their palm catkins are an enormously important source of food for bees after the long winter

The Purgier buckthorn

Without this (and the deciduous tree) there would be no lemon butterflies here!

To name just a few examples! Wood pear, speierling, buckthorn, pimpernut, dirndl, crab apple, regional currants and raspberries and much more are now growing in our gardens! And the insects are delighted with the wide range of food and habitats on offer. But we want a few more, like the perfumed cherry ..... .
