Sustainability when buying a Christmas tree - a difficult topic

The run-up to Christmas is a time full of rituals - buying a Christmas tree is just as much a part of it as making an Advent wreath. This year, let's question what we are focusing on, as there are many different options.

In addition to short delivery routes, regional trees score points for storing CO2, filtering fine dust and storing water during heavy rainfall.

In Lower Austria alone, an incredible 1.1 million Christmas trees are harvested every season. And the traditional regional trees don't just make eyes sparkle on Christmas Eve. The trees are also a real asset on other days of the year. "Our Christmas trees are grown close to nature, in accordance with the strict regulations of local agriculture and thus do a lot for our environment," explains Josef Reithner, Chairman of ARGE NÖ Christbaumbauern proudly.

For example, a study shows that domestic Christmas tree plantations provide a home for many endangered animal and plant species.

"Our Christmas tree plantations have a very positive impact on the occurrence of certain bird species such as red-backed shrike and woodlark. For every tree harvested, a new one is replanted - in the spirit of sustainability," says Reithner.

Christmas tree trends 2023

In addition to the secure supply of sustainably produced Christmas trees and their quality, other trends for this year can also be derived from previous years.

The trend towards a second Christmas tree seems so absurd to us that, after consultation with the editorial team, we do not wish to comment on it.

The "living" potted tree is generally regarded as a sustainable alternative.

We advise caution, as fir trees are deep-rooted and would therefore need a huge pot to provide the necessary space. As this would be extremely unwieldy for consumers, radical root pruning is often carried out. As a result, the tree is unable to survive after Christmas.

Another option is the organically grown Christmas tree - if it is not transported too far, it is a good alternative. You can see where to find them here.

Admittedly, it is difficult to find a sustainable option for the Christmas tree without compromising on the effect, the instant Christmas spirit and tradition. A really difficult topic. 🎄
