Circular economy of the City of Vienna: From the organic waste garbage can to the flower bed
Just in time for the start of the gardening year, the soil from Municipal Department 48 "Guter Grund" is once again available at all Viennese waste disposal sites and at the 48er-Tandler. The peat-free soil, which is made from garden waste, apple cleanings, salad leaves and other biogenic waste from the more than 90,000 organic waste garbage cans in the green belt, closes the cycle of nature in an environmentally friendly and natural way.
For Climate City Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky, this is a genuine circular economy:
"The high-quality and regional Viennese potting and garden soil is a 'good reason' for the Viennese to use the organic waste garbage can. Everyone who disposes of their garden and kitchen waste in the organic waste garbage can makes an important contribution to the circular economy and thus to climate protection."
Excellent quality: organic, regional, environmentally friendly
The raw material for the potting soil is the more than 100,000 tons of organic waste that the 48er collects in the more than 90,000 organic waste garbage cans in the city's green belt. From this, between 40,000 and 50,000 tons of A+ quality compost are produced annually in Europe's largest composting plant, the city's own Lobau composting plant.
The soil is then mixed at Compo 's soil plant in the 22nd district. This means that the entire organic cycle - from collection in the organic waste garbage can to processing the soil - takes place in Vienna. This ensures the shortest possible transportation routes.
No mineral fertilizers or peat are used in the production process. Both are important factors for climate protection. The peat-free soil from 48er consists of 100 percent natural ingredients and meets the strict requirements of the Austrian Ecolabel.
The quality criteria ensure a balanced supply of nutrients, guarantee high plant growth and offer a sustainable soil alternative.
The "Guter Grund" soil can be used for all planting in the home and garden, for potting and repotting flowering and garden plants and for improving the soil in flower and vegetable beds.
From mid-February to October 2024, the peat-free 48er soil "Guter Grund" will be available at all Viennese waste disposal sites and at the 48er-Tandler in the districts of Margareten and Donaustadt.
