Who would think of dumping part of their weekly shopping directly into the garbage can? But we certainly could, because statistically speaking, around 17 percent of all food worldwide ends up unused in the garbage can. According to the United Nations Food Index Report 2021, that's an estimated 931 million tons of food per year.

The fact that up to 828 million people are starving at the same time is a scandal, because food waste in industrialized countries also has something to do with the plight of many people in developing countries. It is not that difficult to take a first step in a different direction and throw away less food.
