What is the most sustainable way to buy a Christmas tree?

Christmas tree sales in Austria traditionally begin on December 8.

Since doing without the much-anticipated, wonderfully fragrant epicenter of Christmas seems impossible at the moment, the question arises as to the best way to buy a Christmas tree.

The artificial tree

The idea of an artificial tree that can be reused every year may scare some of us - but it would actually be sustainable. According to research, there's just one problem:

The PVC from which it is made is so harmful to the environment that it would have to be used for at least 20 years for the calculation to work out. Statistically speaking, however, the average PVC tree ends up in the bin after 6 years.

The living tree

This may be an option for people with green fingers, but the growth rate is not very high after a long stay in heated rooms. Also, there should be no traces of wax on the needles or tinsel residue (well, that's obvious) on the tree.

The organic Christmas tree

Organic Christmas trees bought locally are our favorite solution. But what does organic actually mean when it comes to Christmas trees?

Declaration according to www.umweltberatung.at:

"While conventional Christmas tree cultures use weed killers, synthetic chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizers, organic Christmas tree cultures work with nature. In organic Christmas tree cultures, the grass is kept short by mulching and mowing or special sheep - the Shropshire sheep - graze between the Christmas trees. The organic cultivation of the crops, sufficient planting distances between the trees and the promotion of beneficial insects counteract diseases and pests - without toxic pesticides!"
